Random wallpaper Python script for Windows
To be able to use this you'll need:
It changes the wallpaper to a random one every 5 minutes. Interval can be changed inside the script.
You'll have to set a folder path, without a trailing slash, and that folder must contain only images. It does not resize the images to fit the current desktop or whatever else, do that yourself.
How you run the script (as a service or whatnot) is up to you.
You could create a task and set it to repeat itself every X minutes. If so, use this script (it has the while loop removed).
No warranty is offered, your computer might blow up and your pr0n might get erased. I'm not responsible for it \o/
Policy Kit’s defaults prevent users from mounting internal storage
For the first time HAL told me "I'm afraid I can't do that" (my name isn't Dave :P) when I tried to mount my USB drive. After a bit of googling I found a solution on PolicyKit's bugtracker. Worked like a charm.

How to fool Canon’s EOS Utility Updater
Recently I reinstalled Windows and had to reinstall EOS Utility for my Canon EOS 400D. I don't keep driver CDs around because I can get all the drivers and software I need from the producer's webstite... or so I thought. Canon seems to offer just the updater for EOS Utility, not the software itself. After a bit of poking around I found out that if you misplace your CD you have to buy a new one for about 20USD. Screw that. I poked around more and found out that the updater actually is an installer that just overwrites everything and that it checks some registries. Add these to your Windows registry and you'll be able to run the updater as an installer:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\DPP]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Utility]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\PhotoStitch]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX]
In yer face Canon! This is the first time I hated Canon for anything :( Some time ago I remember them offering the software for nothing on their website. *shrug*

No more mobile phone
My Nokia E51 died a few days ago - either says no network coverage all of the time or doesn't detect the SIM card - probably because I dropped it on the floor a month ago...
For the moment I don't feel the need to buy a new phone and I feel very good without one, but some people around me (girlfriend, mom) nag me to buy one so they can 'keep in touch in case something comes up'. Balls to that. IRC, IM and email are more than enough and they should know that. I'm going to try to spend 2 or 3 weeks without buying a new phone...if I don't cave from the nagging :D
I wonder what this little experiment will lead to. A friend gave up IM in favor of the occasional IRC conversation and doesn't miss using IM. It'd be so awesome if I manage to break free from this useless need of a mobile phone. Sure, it is great in case of emergency, but ..meh.
