How to fool Canon’s EOS Utility Updater
Recently I reinstalled Windows and had to reinstall EOS Utility for my Canon EOS 400D. I don’t keep driver CDs around because I can get all the drivers and software I need from the producer’s webstite… or so I thought. Canon seems to offer just the updater for EOS Utility, not the software itself. After a bit of poking around I found out that if you misplace your CD you have to buy a new one for about 20USD. Screw that. I poked around more and found out that the updater actually is an installer that just overwrites everything and that it checks some registries. Add these to your Windows registry and you’ll be able to run the updater as an installer:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\DPP]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Utility]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\PhotoStitch]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX]
In yer face Canon! This is the first time I hated Canon for anything :( Some time ago I remember them offering the software for nothing on their website. *shrug*
